the town was largely destroyed by a fire inside 1528, but prospered fallowing a Great North Road was diverted to run across it inside 1766 and the East Coast Main Line and Chesterfield Canal was built to run across Retford.

It gets its title from either an ancient ford crossing through the flow of any stream Idle which diarrhea through the town.

Retford gained its foremost charter inside 1246, once Henry IIWe granted the right for the fair, this was late touch holding the Saturday Market by Edward I inside 1275.
